It depends. If you are not hauling then I would say that you should take only two ropes. If you ARE hauling then two lead ropes and a static line. I would lead with one dynamic rope, haul with the second dynamic rope. Have one person jug the lead line, one jug the static. Usually the static jugger will get to the belay first and can help with the hauling. the end of the haul line can become the lead line and the leader can start off climbing the above pitch with the static and the one lead line until the other person finishes cleaning the last pitch. There are many different options on this theme. but in general: two ropes is perfect for three people NOT hauling and three ropes for folks who are hauling.

Fascinating sport. I have been scared of heights since my teens, as a kid i used to jump from the roof of the house, never got injured but still scared of heights. Don't know how you people do it. Seen Cliff hanger dozens of times for obvious reasons.
