Notes: Approach and Descent times are for parties going in a day with light rack and no huge haul bags.

Astro man

Approach 52 minutes.

In late September the route is in the shade by 2pm. endurance corner goes in the shade by 11am.


Beggars Buttress

Approach 7 minutes, descent 75 minutes.

In mid August the route goes out of the sun at 10:30 am. In late May the route goes into the shade at noon.


East Buttress of El Capitan

Approach 59 minutes, descent 90 minutes.

In mid July the route goes into the shade at 5:30 PM!


East Buttress of Lower Cathedral Rock

Approach 15 minutes, descent 50 minutes.

In mid August the route goes out of the sun at 1pm. In October it goes into the shade at 2 pm.


East Buttress of Middle Cathedral Rock

Approach: 15 minutes. descent 80 minutes.

In mid August the route is out of sun at 1:30 pm

In mid September the route is out of the sun by 10 am


Munginella left of lower Yosemite Falls

Approach: 10 minutes. descent 10 minutes.

Large right facing corner on this route puts it in the shade by 2pm in mid July.


Nose, (the) of El Capitan

Approach: 12 minutes. descent 100 minutes.

In May the sun hits from the Texas flake down by 8 am. The upper Dihedrals stay in the shade until afternoon, then loose sun about two hours before sunset. Stove legs to Texas go into the shade about 3 hours before sunset.


Regular NWF route on Half Dome

Approach via the Death slabs is 130 minutes, descent is 175 minutes

Route goes into the sun at 3pm in late September.


Royal Arches route

Approach 5 minutes from the Awanhee parking lot. Descent via North Dome gully is 100 minutes if you stay on route.

In the fall the route has shade for the first very early hours of the day and goes into the shade about 90 minutes before dark in the evening. In late May the route goes into the sun just before 9 am.


Salathe wall

Approach: 12 minutes. descent 110 minutes.

In May the Free blast gets sun around 9 am,  the spire gets sun at about 10:30 am.


West Face of El Capitan

Approach 60 minutes. Descent 150 minutes.

In mid August the base of route goes in the sun at 12:15 pm
